In Black Myth: Wukong, you gain the ability to transform into defeated enemies for a single powerful attack, and you also receive a passive benefit while that Spirit is equipped. However, the first time you try to pick up a Spirit—likely from the Wandering Wight in the Forest of Wolves—you'll see the prompt: "Cannot absorb Spirits without guidance." This simply means you haven't yet unlocked the Blessed Gourd, which is required to absorb Spirits.

Unlocking the Blessed Gourd

You unlock the Blessed Gourd in Chapter 1 at the Snake Trail in the Bamboo Grove. Progress through the area until you reach the Snake Trail Keeper's Shrine, then ascend the steps next to it. Just before the bridge, you'll find a wise master working at a table. Speak to him to trigger a cutscene and receive the Blessed Gourd, which permanently enables you to absorb Spirits from certain defeated enemies.

Retrieving Lost Spirits and Using Them

If you defeated the Wandering Wight (or any other Spirit enemy) before unlocking the gourd, don't worry. The Spirit pickup may disappear from the world, but you can retrieve it by resting at any Keeper's Shrine and selecting the "Retrieve Spirits" option. This works for any Spirit you missed, including the Wandering Wight. To absorb a Spirit from a fresh enemy drop, walk up to the floating essence and press X (controller) or E (keyboard). Once absorbed, equip a Spirit by opening the Equipment screen and selecting the third slot on the top row. While in combat, activate your equipped Spirit's ability by pressing LT+RT together (controller) or F (keyboard). The transformation lasts for a single attack and also grants a passive effect as long as the Spirit is equipped.

A Note on Spirit Drops

Not every enemy drops a Spirit. Typically, you'll obtain them from Yaoguai Chiefs and Kings, though some regular enemies can also yield them. The Wandering Wight is an early example you may encounter before unlocking the gourd—if you killed it early, simply use the Retrieve Spirits option at a shrine later to claim its Spirit.
