I Botched a Diamond Because of One Harvest Check — Don't Be Me

I still see that Level 9 Legendary bull in my dreams. Three hours of tracking through Yukon Valley, a blizzard trying to freeze my binoculars, twenty real-life minutes crouched behind a rock while my tracking dog gave me side-eye. Then I took the shot. Clean lung. Perfect. But then — because I am an impatient gremlin with the impulse control of a caffeinated squirrel — I sent a second round into its shoulder as it staggered. And a third? Yeah. I did that too. When the harvest screen popped up, my gorgeous Diamond trophy score sat there wrapped in a Gold medal. One failed check. That's all it took to turn three hours of patience into a comedy of errors. 😭

So, is it any wonder I now treat harvest checks like a sacred text?

How Harvest Checks & Penalties Work (2026 Edition)

As of the September 9.3 patch (2026), the core Scoring 2.0 rules remain gloriously, brutally unchanged. The game runs four mandatory criteria the instant you tag an animal. Your final medal comes from the animal's Trophy Score only if every single check passes. Rare fur? Doesn't matter. Newly added Great One Taruca? Still doesn't matter. The game is a merciless bureaucrat, and it does not accept bribes.

Here's the penalty structure, which I have memorized against my will:

Failure Result
Fail 1 check Medal drops 1 tier (Diamond → Gold)
Fail 2+ checks Drops further — Silver, Bronze, or the void
Diamonds & Great Ones Require a flawless 4/4 pass. No partial credit.

That means a Great One Moose with a picture-perfect trophy score still awards nothing above Gold if you got trigger-happy and fired a third shot to "anchor" it. Ask me how I know. 🫠

The 4 Updated Harvest Check Requirements (2026)

All four rules are active as of the 9.3 patch, with no modifications to core logic. Here's the cheat sheet I wish I'd tattooed on my forearm:

Check Requirement Common Fail Condition
Proper Ammo Ammo class must match the animal's class (1–9) Using Class 7–9 rounds on a Class 3 Roe Deer
Two Shots or Fewer Animal must be downed in ≤2 hits A wounding shot followed by two panicked follow-ups
Intact Trophy Organ Skull/rack/horns must not be damaged Headshots on antlered or horned species
Vital Organ Hit At least 1 shot must strike Heart, Lungs, Liver, Neck (Cervical Spine), or Brain Body cavity hits that miss all vitals

Ammo class matching is the sneakiest failure point for newer players. Running .300 Magnum (Class 7–9) on a Class 3 Axis Deer auto-fails the Proper Ammo check regardless of how beautifully you placed the shot. Conversely, the Richardson .500 added in April 2026 is currently the top pick for Class 9 animals like Cape Buffalo — it can produce a one-shot broadside kill while passing every check cleanly.

Pro Tips to Never Fail a Harvest Check (From a Recovering Failure)

Shot placement is where Diamonds are won or lost. Follow these field-tested rules, which I now chant like a mantra:

  1. Never aim for the head on antlered or horned species. The skull is the trophy organ — a single headshot fails the Intact Trophy Organ check even if the animal drops in one hit. I learned this the hard way with a Red Deer stag. RIP, buddy.

  2. Default to the broadside double-lung. It catches both Lungs (vital) and often clips the Heart, virtually guaranteeing the vital hit check while leaving the rack untouched.

  3. One clean vital hit beats two sloppy body shots. If your first shot is a confirmed lung hit and the animal is still mobile, resist the urge to pepper it. A second shot is your full budget.

  4. For bears and big cats, the skull is also the trophy organ, so avoid brain shots in standard scoring scenarios unless a mission explicitly permits it.

  5. Match ammo before you leave camp. Cross-reference your target's class against your loaded caliber every single time — a Class 4–6 Whitetail needs .270, .308, or .30-06, not your leftover Class 2 varmint rounds.

Preventing loadout mismatches before heading into the field is where tools like LootBar for theHunter: Call of the Wild add real value for tracking need zones and confirming class-correct loadouts before a session starts. Full caliber-to-class matching tables and rule clarifications are available on the theHunter: Call of the Wild official website — and honestly, you should bookmark it before building a new loadout. Your future self will thank you.

Getting the vital hit right also removes pressure from the two-shot rule. A broadside double-lung on a stationary animal drops most Class 4–6 deer in a single hit — giving you a free second shot buffer if the animal bumps terrain and runs. Practice reading the broadside angle; the sweet spot sits roughly one-third up the body from the bottom of the chest, just behind the front leg. Land that hit consistently, and botched Diamond harvests become the exception, not the gut-punch rule.

So, will you be the hunter who walks away with a Diamond, or the one who rage-quits after a Gold? The choice — and the shot placement — is yours. 🎯
